Human Resources

Since MBM's beginning in 1970, we have learned that a successful growth plan depends directly on the contribution made by every employee in our organization. We realize that productivity, efficiency and job satisfaction result from proper employee selection, screening and training. Our fully-staffed and trained Human Resources Department is an integral part of the Company and has been instrumental in the Company's success.

At MBM, our Human Resources Department is responsible for recruiting, hiring, orientation, training, safety, compensation reviews, benefits, performance appraisals, counseling and terminations. In addition, with help of specialized consulting firms, the department ensures the Company's compliance with all government regulations involving employment practices and personnel issues. All MBM employees are expected to abide by the rules and regulations which govern our overall organization.

  • SCREENING INTERVIEW: This interview is performed after the application is completed and allows us to get to know the applicant better and to review his/her answers.
  • DRUG TESTING: On-site drug testing is done immediately after the applicant has completed our employment application. We stop the employment process if the applicant tests positive for drugs or alcohol.
  • BACKGROUND CHECK: We research each applicant's criminal and civil records for a minimum of seven years. In addition, we check personal references, determine "true" identity and conduct a driving record check on each applicant, as applicable.
  • NEW EMPLOYEE ORIENTATION AND TRAINING: All new employees are given verbal instructions as well as a complete orientation package which explains the Company's policies and regulations. A picture ID badge is issued and must be worn at all times on the job. All information regarding the position is provided and training begins.
  • ON-THE-JOB TRAINING: All personnel are continuously trained on cleaning techniques, new products, use and care of equipment, sexual harassment and safety, as well as numerous other topics. Refresher seminars are held every six months for supervisory personnel.
  • ADVANCED TRAINING: All Officers, Branch Managers, Route Managers and Area Managers are required to pass and receive their designation as a Certified Building Service Executive (CBSE) or Registered Building Service Manager (RBSM). Qualifications are determined by our national association, Building Service Contractors Association International. CBSE and RBSM designations are honored by contractors, building owners and managers and others associated with our industry.
  • CONTRACTOR DEVELOPMENT: MBM believes in working with smaller and in many cases minority-owned businesses. We provide consulting and management development expertise to these businesses. If the contract allows or in some cases requires it, certain accounts will be subcontracted to one of these businesses. It is our belief that the additional experience our minority contractors gain will help their company grow while also improving the quality of service procided by MBM. In 1998, MBM received the City of Houston Mayor's Distinguished Service Award for our commitment and dedication to the Mentor/Protege Program in which we work with minority-owned companies.

Safety Department

MBM takes a serious approach to worksite safety through its dedicated staff of safety professionals and innovative programs. These programs are designed to reduce liability for our customers as well as the company.

Client Services are offered and managed from the Vice President level and include:

  • INITIAL RISK MANAGEMENT/SAFETY EVALUATION at “start-up” of new projects.
  • HEAVY INVOLVEMENT IN SAFETY TRAINING and oversight of “new start” personnel.
  • COMPREHENSIVE SAFTY PROGRAMS, including employee incentives to drive safety and safety awareness at the worksite.
  • DAMAGE, BREAKAGE & LOSS INVESTIGATIONS conducted by internal staff members and professional contract investigators.
  • COMPLIANCE with local, state and federal regulatory agencies, regulations and procedures.
  • ENFORCEMENT OF POLICIES AND PROCEDURES to protect MBM personnel as well as customer employees and visitors.
  • SLIP-METER TESTING of hard floor surfaces is conducted at customer job sites on a pre-determined and as-needed basis.
  • KEY AND ACCESS CARD PROGRAMS are designed and enforced to ensure the security of our customer’s property and the safety of all individuals working at the facility.
  • SAFETY INCENTIVES such as the company’s Safety BINGO program are an “investment” designed to reduce the number and severity of work related injuries.
  • COMPREHENSIVE SAFETY TRAINING beyond the orientation stage is ongoing at MBM. Regularly scheduled Toolbox Meetings are held at each location.
  • MBM’S TIPS LINE can best be described as an internal “crime stoppers” program.
  • PRE-EMPLOYMENT AND RANDOM DRUG TESTING on all MBM employees.
  • PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING is a joint effort between MBM’s Safety and Human Resources Departments. All applicants must pass strict requirements to be considered for employment.

Safety/Liability Evaluation

Prior to beginning work for new customers, the MBM Safety Department will complete a comprehensive survey designed to identify safety and/or liability issues which could be encountered by MBM personnel. This evaluation will help us design site-specific procedures to assist workers in doing their jobs more efficiently and in a safer manner. Often this evaluation yields the identification of potential liability issues which could have negative consequences for our customers. This information will be shared with the customer so that changes/corrections can be made at the customer’s discretion. (i.e.: poor lighting, unsafe flooring, etc.)

MBM Safety Audit Program

The MBM Safety Audit is a tool used to identify safety deficiencies at the work site and to quickly correct them. This quarterly audit is weighted and scored and is often referred to as a “carrot and stick” approach to safety. This is an accurate assessment since there are consequences for poor audits and financial rewards for superior ones.

At MBM, we take safety very seriously. This “no nonsense” program goes a long way toward creating a safe work environment for our customers and ourselves.

Slip-Meter Testing

As a value added service, the MBM Safety department performs slip-meter testing at customer work sites on a recurring pre-determined basis (quarterly, etc.), after major floor work has been performed or in response to a slip-fall incident. Additionally, tests can also be performed upon request by our customers.

MBM has heavily invested in cutting edge technology and utilizes the automated Sellmaier? floor slip tester to measure the coefficient of friction on hard floor surfaces. This free service helps to reduce our customer’s liability by:

  • Building a “history” of a safe floor.
  • Documenting satisfactory slip-meter results with hard copy graphs from the slip-meter.
  • The highly trained Safety staff is skilled at conducting full-scale, post accident investigations of slips and falls. With our customer's permission we will:
    • Interview Witnesses
    • Take Digital Photographs
    • Conduct Floor Tests
    • Obtain samples of foreign substances on floor surfaces and identify them through independent laboratory analysis.

Strict criteria are adhered to when making employment decisions at McLemore Building Maintenance, Inc.:

  • Initial interview.
  • Verification of information on application/resume.
  • Criminal background checks.
  • Pre-employment drug testing.
  • Reference checks.
  • Motor Vehicle Records Checks for individuals who drive on behalf of the company.
  • In depth management interviews.
  • Birkman Skills and Interest Tests.*
